Why a good scare is a good thing

It’s Halloween! And it’s a time we love to scare ourselves. Fear is thrilling, and the familiar creepy ghouls and nasty critters we see around this time of year touch off sensations and instincts that date back millions of years, according to evolutionary psychologists. Fear is natural and protects and motivates us; our distant ancestors who were scared of heights and tigers didn’t fall off cliffs or become lunch. We live in a time when people are becoming desensitised to frightening stuff because we see so much horror in the papers and on TV, fictional or, more horrifyingly, not.
